Not too long ago, a heartwarming story inspired hope about humanity in many, as homeless veteran Johnny Bobbitt Jr. used $20 of his own money — money that he obviously needed a lot — to help a woman stranded out of gas.
The act, which quickly spread through the Internet, inspired many to donate to a fundraiser set up in the name of Bobbitt, with the responsibility for collecting the funds being handed to a couple — Kate McClure and Mark D’Amico.
However, the story recently took a sour turn after it was revealed that the money was now completely gone, according to the couple in question.
There are no concrete details about what has happened to the funds, but there is strong speculation going around that the two have simply taken the money out of the account and spent it.
Their side of the story is that they just did not want to hand over such a large sum to a person they saw as having problems, as they believed that he would immediately spend the money on drugs.
Whether or not this version is true is impossible to say at this point, as all $400,000 that had been raised for Mr. Bobbitt is now missing from the account.
Bobbitt got about $75,000 from the money, an old pickup, and a camper the couple brought for him.
GoFundMe, which was used for the fundraiser, has promised to fix the problem. A statement from the site read: “Johnny will be made whole and we’re committing that he’ll get the balance of the funds that he has not yet received or benefited from. GoFundMe’s goal has always been to ensure Johnny gets support he deserves.”
The case is going to be pursued through all legal channels, although if all funds really are gone, it is questionable how much anyone would be able to do to recover anything.
Hopefully, Bobbitt will be able to get the compensation promised by GoFundMe out of the whole ordeal, as there is certainly a lot of attention focused on his situation from all sides right now.
Police officials are trying to solve the mystery of the missing funds and have raided the couple’s home this week.
Officials confirmed this information through the following statement: “Due to the enormous public interest in this matter, I am confirming that a search warrant was executed early this morning at the residence of Mark D’Amico and Katelyn McClure in connection with a criminal investigation into the Johnny Bobbitt matter. As of this time, there have been no charges filed.”
One thing is clear, what started as a kind gesture is getting messier by the day.
